Our social prescribing work brings together our members, other local VCSE infrastructure organisations and stakeholders.
Social Prescribing is part of NHSE's long term plan and is a key component of Universal Personalised Care. It is a non-clinical, person-centred approach to support people to improve their health and wellbeing by referrals into community activity and support, through Social Prescribing Link Workers (SPLW).
NAVCA, in partnership with the National Academy for Social Prescribing (NASP) and Spirit of 2012 have developed a Social Prescribing work stream in response to our members’ increased involvement is this area of delivery.
We aim to create stronger connections between local VCSE infrastructure organisations and stakeholders involved in social prescribing at a national, regional, system and place level, to deliver increased impact and patient outcomes. We are working with our members to identify gaps in the Social Prescribing eco system and to offer solutions.
One of our members, CVS Tendring, has done some great work on social prescribing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EePFoLXQ9Q
Doncaster Community Arts (darts) has also been involved in some work, connecting people to their local community to improve their wellbeing: https://wearedarts.org.uk/creative-directions-and-we-create/.
We visited BPRCVS to talk to them about their social prescribing work, to demonstrate the value and impact of collaboration between local infrastructure organisations and Primary Care Networks.
We visited Nova Wakefield District to talk to them about their social prescribing work, to demonstrate the value and impact of collaboration between local infrastructure organisations and Primary Care Networks, and how this can also lead to stronger capacity building locally.
Helping organisations to maintain and develop an effective social prescribing scheme
This resource is for Social Prescribing Link Worker (SPLW) Host Organisations, with a particular focus on hosting in the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector.
It aims to help Primary Care Networks (PCNs) and host orgnisations establish, develop and maintain a sustainable and effective social prescribing scheme in their local area. It aims to reflect and simplify existing NHS England (NHSE) guidance, including the Social Prescribing Maturity Framework and SPLW Workforce Development Framework. It is a practical, day-to-day guide on how to develop and deliver a quality SPLW hosting service.
This self-assessment development guide is a living document. It includes a wealth of resources, from official NHS publications, guidance from NAVCA, practical tools, case studies highlighting good practice and more. We will add and update the resources as part of the library of resources hosted by the National Association for Social Prescribing (NASP).
If you are aware of any resources that are not listed and may be useful, please contact NAVCA (navca@navca.org.uk).

DownloadIncreasing the impact of social prescribing through collaboration and coproduction
This presentation template and accompanying guidance notes aim to increase the impact of social prescribing through increased co-design/production of the social prescribing infrastructure, and by creating stronger connections between local VCSE infrastructure organisations (LIOs) and stakeholders involved in social prescribing at a national, regional, system and place level.
The presentation will support LIOs to engage with stakeholders around social prescribing. It offers a framework to showcase the role of local VCSE infrastructure, and how the core functions relate directly to, and support the impact of, social prescribing. The presentation has been structured around the standard model of social prescribing published by NHS England and links each relevant element of the Four Functions of Local Infrastructure, published by NAVCA.
It is particularly aimed at supporting engagement with Primary Care Networks, but can also be helpful to engage other local social prescribing stakeholders including, for example, leads for social prescribing within local councils, on Place-Based Partnerships or Integrated Care Partnerships and Boards.
We have collected a range of excellent examples of members’ involvement in both hosting Social Prescribing Link Workers and their wider involvement in strengthening Social Prescribing systems. These case studies, across a range of themes, evidence the added value of VCSE involvement in the work. Please get in touch if you would like to share yours.
NHSE have released a Workforce Development Framework for Social Prescribing. This framework provides guidance for people employed as a link worker and those employing them. It will help increase the understanding of the role and where link workers can have most impact in supporting and empowering people to improve their health and wellbeing. It also sets professional standards and competencies, gives guidance on supervision, training, and continuous professional development. The framework has been developed with support and input from a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
