In 2023, we surveyed our members to find out more about their priorities, concerns, funding sources, and changes in income and expenditure. Read more below.
At the end of the 2022/23 financial year, we surveyed our members to find out more about their priorities, concerns, funding, and changes in income and expenditure.
At the time of publication, we had 179 members, who support over 165,000 small charities and community groups in their local area. Their top two priorities were 'leadership, partnership working and capacity building', and 'support and funding for organisations delivering frontline cost of living support'. Their top two concerns were 'securing sustainable funding', and the 'impact of the cost of living crisis' on the VCSE sector.
We found that 29% of our members have an income greater than £1 million, 40% have an income between £500k and £999k, and 31% have an income under £499k. This means that 71% of our members are classed as small charities themselves, with an income under £1 million, whilst also providing crucial infrastructure support to other small charities.
Our members' core work is often funded by local authorities, grant-makers and health systems, but this funding can be precarious and often does not cover the full costs. This means that the remaining costs might be subsidised through commercial income, contracts or other sources.
There was a significant increase in income and expenditure between 2021/22 and 2022/23. The reasons for this are the increase in Covid recovery grants from government and other funders, additional grants to support activities during the pandemic and the cost of living crisis, and NAVCA members acting as grant-giving bodies.
We want to use research, data and analysis to build a clearer picture of the state of local infrastructure in England. We will use our findings to continue to support our members, focusing on their priorities and concerns.
